Creep, my Chrysalid… - 2024
Alabaster Crust.
← Previous ← . . . . . → Next →
Looking for the perfect imperfection, the moment where what could be terrible becomes exalting, where the crack perfects the emotion and the blur reveals more than it conceals.
A tortured raw material: a piece of alabaster crust, for a being that gradually shapes itself (or unshapes, depending on the moment) and searches for its own personal perfection while accepting its differences and cracks.
In this sculpture, I explore oneself's construction with a being in foetal position, outlined by the stone veinure. And then appear the strata that seem to shape or deform this original being til they reach its heart, and let appear some sort of a foetus, the original being.
When I'm carving, there's always a piece of music playing on a loop. For this one I listened Creep by RadioHead... Their words echoed in my head all the way round, helping me to keep my concentration level and, above all, helping me to achieve the emotion I wanted to spread: "But I'm a creep... I'm a weirdo... What the hell am I doin' here?... I don't belong here"
This sculpture is carved in what is called alabaster crust, which can be incredibly beautiful die to of its veinure, but can also be quite complex to work on due to of its fragility, the ingress of soil and frost. (it’s usually discarded because of its cracks, but their fragility can hide incredible veins).
